The four driving wheels on one side of a 4-8-4 locomotive. On a steam locomotive , a driving wheel is a powered wheel which is driven by the locomotive 's pistons (or turbine , in the case of a steam turbine locomotive ). On a conventional, non-articulated locomotive, the driving wheels are all coupled together with side rods (also known as coupling rods ); normally one pair is directly driven by the main rod (or connecting rod ) which is connected to the end of the piston rod ; power is transmitted to the others through the side rods. On Diesel and Electric locomotives the driving wheels may be directly driven by the traction motors . Coupling rods are not usually used, and it is quite common for each axle to have its own motor. Jackshaft drive and coupling rods were used in the past (e.g. in the Swiss Crocodile locomotive ) but their use is now confined to shunting locomotives . On an articulated locomotive or a duplex locomotive driving wheels are grouped into sets which are linked together within the set. Since a conventional steam locomotive is directly driven, one of the few ways to ' gear ' a locomotive for a particular performance goal is to size the driving wheels appropriately. Freight locomotives generally had driving wheels between 40 and 60 inches (1,016 and 1,524 mm) in diameter; dual-purpose locomotives generally between 60 and 70 inches (1,524 and 1,778 mm), and passenger locomotives between 70 and 100 inches (1,778 and 2,540 mm) or so. Some long wheelbase locomotives (four or more coupled axles) were equipped with blind drivers. These were driving wheels without the usual flanges , which allowed them to negotiate tighter curves without binding. The driving wheels on express passenger locomotives have come down in diameter over the years, e.g. from 8 ft 1 in (2,464 mm) on the GNR Stirling 4-2-2 of 1870 to 6 ft 2 in (1,880 mm) on the SR Merchant Navy Class of 1941. This is because improvements in valve design allowed for higher piston speeds. [ edit ] Balancing Main article: Engine balance A driving wheel on a steam locomotive . On steam locomotives the driving wheels have balance weights to balance the weight of the coupling and connecting rods. The crescent-shaped balance weight is clearly visible in the picture on the right. [ edit ] Whyte notation In the Whyte notation , driving wheels are designated by the middle number or numbers in the set. The UIC classification system counts the number of axles rather than the number of wheels and driving wheels are designated by letters rather than numbers. The suffix 'o' is used to indicate independently powered axles. The number of driving wheels on locomotives varied quite a bit. Some early locomotives had as few as two driving wheels (one axle). The largest number of total driving wheels was 24 (twelve axles) on the 2-8-8-8-2 and 2-8-8-8-4 locomotives. The largest number of coupled driving wheels was 14 (seven axles) on the ill-fated AA20 4-14-4 locomotive. Steering wheels are used in most modern land vehicles , including all mass-production automobiles as well as light and heavy trucks. The steering wheel is the part of the steering system that is manipulated by the driver; the rest of the steering system responds to such driver inputs. This can be through direct mechanical contact as in recirculating ball or rack and pinion steering gears, without or with the assistance of hydraulic power steering , HPS, or as in some modern production cars with the assistance of computer controlled motors, known as Electric Power Steering . With the introduction of federal vehicle regulation in the United States in 1968, FMVSS 114 required the impairment of steering wheel rotation, to hinder motor vehicle theft ; in most vehicles this is accomplished when the ignition key is removed from the ignition lock. [ 1 ] That is believed to be one of the earliest employments of the principle. [ 2 ] From 1898 the Panhard et Levassor cars were equipped as standard with steering wheels. C S Rolls introduced the first car in Britain fitted with a steering wheel when he imported a 6 hp Panhard from France in 1898 [ 3 ] . Arthur Constantin Krebs replaced the tiller with an inclined steering wheel for the Panhard car he designed for the Paris-Amsterdam race which ran from the 7th to 13 July 1898 [ 4 ] . In 1899 Packard used a steering wheel on the second car they built. Within a decade, the steering wheel had entirely replaced the tiller in automobiles. The steering wheel is rigid and the steering column is non collapsible, thus increasing the risk of impaling the driver in case of crash Steering wheels for passenger automobiles are generally circular, and are mounted to the steering column by a hub connected to the outer ring of the steering wheel by one or more spokes (single spoke wheels being a rather rare exception). Other types of vehicles may use the circular design, a butterfly shape, or some other shape. In countries where cars must drive on the left side of the road, the steering wheel is typically on the right side of the car (right-hand drive or RHD); the converse applies in countries where cars drive on the right side of the road (left-hand drive or LHD). Besides its use in steering, the steering wheel is the usual location for a button to activate the car's horn . Additionally, many modern automobiles may have other controls, such as cruise control and audio system controls built into the steering wheel to minimize the extent to which the driver must take their hands off the wheel. In 1968 in the United States regulations ( FMVSS Standard No. 204) were edited concerning the acceptable rearward movement of the steering wheel in case of crash [ 5 ] . Collapsible steering columns were required to meet that Standard. Power steering gives the driver an easier means by which the steering of a car can be accomplished. Modern power steering have almost universally relied on a hydraulic system, although electrical systems are steadily replacing this technology. Mechanical power steering systems (ex. Studebaker, 1952) have been invented, but their weight and complexity negate the benefits that they provide. While other methods of steering passenger cars have resulted from experiments, none have been deployed as successfully as the steering wheel. [ edit ] Other designs A modern Formula One car's steering wheel has buttons and knobs to control various functions as well as gauges and other important items normally found on a Dashboard . The steering wheel is centrally located on certain high-performance sports cars, such as the McLaren F1 , and in the majority of single-seat racing cars. As a driver may have his hands on the steering wheel for hours at a time these are designed with ergonomics in mind. However, the most important concern is that the driver can effectively convey torque to the steering system; this is especially important in vehicles without power steering or in the rare event of a loss of steering assist. A typical design for circular steering wheels is a steel or magnesium rim with a plastic or rubberized grip molded over and around it. Some drivers purchase vinyl or textile steering wheel covers to enhance grip or comfort, or simply as decoration. Another device used to make steering easier is the brodie knob . A similar device in aircraft is the yoke . Water vessels not steered from a stern-mounted tiller are directed with the ship's wheel , which may have inspired the concept of the steering wheel. [ edit ] Banjo steering wheel Banjo steering wheel A Banjo Steering Wheel was an option on many early automobiles. Banjo Wheels predate power steering. The wire spokes were a buffer or absorber between the driver's hands and the drum of the road. Most were 3 or 4 spokes made of four or five wires in each spoke, hence the name "Banjo" [ edit ] Adjustable steering wheels Tilt Wheel The original Tilt Wheel was developed by Edward James Lobdell in the early 1900's. The seven position Tilt Wheel was made available in several General Motors products in 1963. Originally a luxury option on cars, the tilt function helps to adjust the steering wheel by moving the wheel through an arc in an up and down motion. Tilt Steering Wheels rely upon a ratchet joint located in the steering column just below the steering wheel. By disengaging the ratchet lock, the wheel can be adjusted upward or downward while the steering column remains stationary below the joint. Some designs place the pivot slightly forward along the column, allowing for a fair amount of vertical movement of the steering wheel with little actual tilt, while other designs place the pivot almost inside the steering wheel, allowing adjustment of the angle of the steering wheel with almost no change it its height. Telescope Wheel Developed by General Motors Saginaw Steering Gear Division, the telescoping wheel can be adjusted to an infinite number of positions in a 3-inch range. The Tilt and Telescope steering wheel was introduced as an exclusive option on Cadillac automobiles in 1965. Adjustable Steering Column In contrast, an adjustable steering column allows steering wheel height to be adjusted with only a small, useful change in tilt. Most of these systems work with compression locks or electric motors instead of ratchet mechanisms; the latter may be capable of moving to a memorized position when a given driver uses the car, or of moving up and forward for entry or exit. Swing-away Steering Wheel Introduced on the 1961 Ford Thunderbird , and made available on other Ford products throughout the 1960s, the Swing-away steering wheel allowed the steering wheel to move nine inches to the right when the transmission selector was in Park, so as to make driver exit and entry easier. [ edit ] Usage The steering wheel should be used with strategic movements of the hand and wrist in spinning motions. Caution and care should be used to ensure safety of the extremities. The constant motions used must be performed with caution. Remember to follow the "Handy rule" Which states "Proper posture of the hand-arm system while using hand tools is very important. As a rule the wrist should not be bent, but must be kept straight to avoid overexertion of such tissues as tendons and tendon sheaths and compression of nerves and blood vessels." 1 The act of turning the steering wheel while the vehicle is stationary is called dry steering . It is generally advised to avoid dry steering as it puts strain on the steering mechanism and causes undue wear of the tires. [ edit ] Buttons and controls on the steering wheel The first button added to the steering wheel was a switch to activate the car's electric horn . Traditionally located on the steering wheel hub or center pad, the horn switch was sometimes placed on the spokes or activated via a decorative horn ring which obviated the necessity to move a hand away from the rim. A further development, the Rim Blow steering wheel, integrated the horn switch into the steering wheel rim itself. When speed control systems were introduced in the 1960s, some automakers located the operating switches for this feature on the steering wheel. In the 1990s, a proliferation of new buttons began to appear on automobile steering wheels. Remote or alternate adjustments for the audio system , the telephone and voice control , acoustic repetition of the last navigation instruction, infotainment system, and on board computer functions can be operated comfortably and safely using buttons on the steering wheel. This ensures a high standard of additional safety since the driver is able in this way to control and operate many systems without even taking hands off the wheel or eyes off the road. The scroll buttons can be used to set volume levels or page through menus. Steering wheel audio control can use universal interfaces, [ 6 ] [ 7 ] wired or wirelessly. [ 8 ] [ 9 ] The buttons can be adjusted manually for reach and height . [ edit ] Gaming imitations Main article: Video game controller#Steering wheel Certain game controllers available for arcade cabinets , personal computers and console games are designed to look and feel like a steering wheel and intended for use in racing games . The cheapest ones are just paddle controllers with a larger wheel, but most today's examples employ force feedback to simulate the tactile feedback a real driver feels from a steering wheel. This contributes to steering "feel" and is one of the hallmarks of a true "driver's car" or sports car . Neale (Lancashire, UK) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This review is from: Driving Force Pro Wheel for PS3 (Video Game) This is a well made wheel and works perfectly with both PS3 & PS2, I have even tried on my PC and it works fine. I did find though that it DOESN'T work properly with Ridge Racer 7 on the PS3 because it only selects 200 degree mode with no force feedback ( I have heard that these features are in the US version but not the EUROPEAN version) Gran Turismo 4 has full 900 degree & force feedback support whether on the PS2 or PS3. I have found that Burnout 2, 3, Revenge & Paradise (Demo) work brilliantly with the wheel. The wheel automatically runs through a checking process when powered on & again when a game starts, during which it automatically selects 200 or 900 degree mode dependant on which the game supports. All in all this is a well made item & if you are looking for a wheel this one is worth the money. I have given it 4 stars mainly because logitech stated it was compatible with Ridge Racer 7 in 900 degree & with force feedback but it isn't (not in Europe anyway) otherwise it would have got 5 stars. No matter how much I persevered I simply could not get used to how sensetive they were. Then came along this steering wheel. 900deg of rotation...like a steering wheel in a real car...3 turns lock to lock...like in a real car. If you thought Gran Turismo was realistic, this steering wheel takes it to the next level of realism. In my opinion then next level beyond this would be an air bag deploying when you crash :-) All aspects of this steering wheel are perfect, the only negative I would say is that the motors are a little noisy but then that is me being a bit pedantic. Another key aspect I like, when you are hammering down the start finish straight in a Nissan GTR, braking at the last minute, the last thing you need is for the pedals moving when you are hard on the brakes, not with this set up. Logitechs unique carpet grip system ensures the pedals do not move. Incidently whilst I am on the subject of braking, the pedals are like in a real car where the accelerator is light and free whereas the brake pedal has resistance, the harder you press, the harder the car brakes. All in all, if you can't afford the G25, then go for this one, there are no compromises, this is an amazing wheel, the G25 is more amazing. Orr (England) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME) Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars This review is from: Driving Force Pro Wheel for PS3 (Video Game) I bought this Logitech wheel aiming to play it first with two PS3 games I already own: Gran Turismo Prologue (Japanese disc version) and Burnout Paradise. Starting off with BP, I found the wheel could sometimes be quite twitchy and could lock up when trying to execute take-downs. For instance, when trying to push an opponent into a wall, if they escape it is very difficult to correct in time to stop slamming into the wall yourself. The performance of the wheel and pedals is fine in games such as this when steering in a relatively straight line, but when going hard into corners the steering can become quite erratic. Moving on to GT:P, I had much more positive impressions. This is largely due to the 900 degree steering mode in this game, which gives a wheel user a qualitative advantage over controller users, because it is possible to steer further right or left with the Logitech wheel. The wheel just feels more "right" when used with these types of simulation driving games, and offers more precise handling for the gamer. Although I could not switch off Froce Feedback via the menus in this game, I found that unplaugging the AC adapter from the mains switches this feature off. Build Quality: Very good indeed. Solidly built pedals, wheel and wheel-mounted buttons. However, the integrated USB cable (which comes out of the wheel housing) means that if anything happens to this cable, you'll have to buy a new wheel. Overall: I have given this wheel 4 stars because I feel that when used with games that do not support 900 degree steering (such as BP and most other arcade racers), the Logitech wheel lacks precision and the option in many cases to fine-tune steering and brake/accelaration sensitivity via in-game menus. The wheel has no installation software, so it is entirely at the mercy of each game whether they support such fine-tuning options via their own menus.
