PNH methods are mentally, emotionally and physically similar to the ways that horses act with one another within a herd. PNH allows for thresholds, boundaries and fears for both horse and human, and encourages issues to be worked through, using mutual communication, leadership and love. Key components in this are attitude, knowledge, tools, techniques, time and imagination. In the program, it is recognized that both the horse and human have responsibilities in the partnership. One aim of the program is to preserve the dignity of the horse by continuously watching for subtle cues in the horses posture, movements and facial expressions. Building on the idea of "Horsenalities", or horse personalities, it encourages Horsemen and women to take the horse's individual characteristics into account. The program teaches people to interact with horses through communication consisting of the seven types of interactions that horses have with one another. These are referred to as the "7 games". The Parellis (Pat and Linda) developed a home-study program composed of progressive levels of knowledge and skill. The program defines four areas of skills: on the ground On Line, at Liberty; freestyle riding with little or no contact to the horse's head or mouth, and finesse riding with close head/mouth contact. [ edit ] Level One The first Parelli Natural Horsemanship level, Level 1, covers safety, basic skills, partnership and mental fitness. Level 1 teaches students how to gain an understanding of their horse and their horse of them on the ground first. As this work begins to progress the horse and human develop a stronger level of trust and understanding. The purpose of the activities in Level One is said to be to give the human a basic set of communication tools, much like single words to a child learning to talk. As these words become clearer between human and horse they can be used to create more complex communication. The higher level courses build on these activities. The riding portion of this level focuses on techniques that are said to put the rider more in tune with the horse. This consists of riding the horse without giving directional cues to the horse, instead students are encouraged to "go with" the horse in larger and larger spaces as the human's confidence grows in his ability to stay balanced and connected with the horse under various conditions. [ edit ] Level Two Level Two is focused on moving from using simple communication signals, "Baby Talk", to more complex requests through the use of various aids. There is a focus on riding with the whole body and not relying on reins for balance. This level also focuses on building confidence in horse and rider. Through ground work on and around obstacles, such as tarps and pedestals, the horse is prepared for the varied terrain that would be encountered on the trail or in the field. [ edit ] Level Three Level Three builds on the skills gained in Levels One and Two. Called the Refinement Level, it helps the human learn how to use nearly-invisible cues of focus and energy to communicate movements to the horse. It challenges both horse and human to become even more calm, smart, brave and athletic. At this level, horses are ridden with full equipment or none at all; they are confident with a wide variety of tasks and tools. Their humans are well-versed in what makes them tick and can, perhaps with help, sort out most of the issues that come up in their joint ventures. Pat urges horse people to master Level Three before choosing a particular equine discipline (or equine sport) and competition in that discipline. Several icons of the mainstream equine industry, such as Craig Johnson (reining) [ 1 ] , Leon Harrel (cutting) [ 2 ] , Walter Zettl (dressage), Louis Lucio (dressage), Luca Moneta (Jumping), and Karen and David O'Connor (eventing, dressage) [ 2 ] , have utilized similar methods in their own horsemanship and voiced support for Parelli's methods. Dr. Robert M. Miller , a veterinarian, speaker and author, has been a supporter of Pat Parelli for decades [ 3 ] . This method of human interaction with horses purports to work with the horses instinct and herd mentality. [ edit ] Parelli Horsenality TM The Program uses the concept of "Horsenality" [ 4 ] . The tool is said to assist students of the Parelli Program with the challenge of "reading" their horses accurately during their working sessions with them. Through the use of a trait identification system (both positive and negative traits or behaviors) the Horsenality index provides a picture of the innate characteristics of the student's horse. Along with the identification of the Horsenality come recommended strategies for managing behaviors and strategies for achieving success. This system borrows heavily from parallel concepts in human psychology derived from Analytical psychology , Personality psychology , the concepts of Four Temperaments , and the more modern Keirsey Temperament Sorter . There are no independent clinical studies that either verify or disprove this theory as applied to horses. [ edit ] Criticism There has been criticism against the Parellis by the mainstream equestrian world. This is partly due to his dramatic performances and demonstrations with some of his own horses, his marketing programs to sell his personalized products, the general commercialization of his technique, and the cost of his programs. [ 5 ] The Parellis have also been known to make negative comments about other riding disciplines, including dressage . Parelli supporters speculate that this criticism is partly due to the boldness of his demonstrations with some of his own horses, and possibly in part to the fact that he charges a premium price for his materials. [ 6 ] By highly successful marketing of horsemanship information that, according to critics of Parelli's tactics, is widely available and has been passed down for generations and considered to be common sense by those knowledgeable of the horse, many competitors to Parelli consider his methods to be inappropriately described as exclusive to the Parelli system, particularly when re-named by Parelli. [ citation needed ] In contrast Parelli openly credits his mentors. [ 7 ] Finally, because some training techniques result in horses that do not respond to traditional horse-handling commands, when the horse is sold it may require either retraining of the horse or the new owner may need to learn (for a price) Parelli methods. [ citation needed ] The program, in fact, encourages sellers to sell their horses only to other Parelli users. [ citation needed ] This has led to criticism that Parelli is creating a cult. [ edit ] Training Video Controversy In March 2010, a video entitled "Natural Horsemanship the Parelli way!!!!!!!!!!!!!" was uploaded to YouTube, showing founder Linda Parelli striking a horse repeatedly with a rope, pulling hard on its halter, slapping it several times in the face with the palm of her hand and generally handling it in an ostensibly rough manner. [ 8 ] The video was composed of edited excerpts from a video originally featured in the Parelli "Level 1" Pack. The uproar from disgruntled fans forced a subsequent public apology from Linda Parelli. Another, possibly worse, video surfaced on youtube in mid 2010 where Pat Parelli is shown roping a horse, using a servere method called a gum-line, and thousands of people have risen up against this method seen as abusive and not "natural". I would really like to try the methods and join the Savvy Club. Is it absolutely necessary to stop riding your horse while you do the ground work in Level One? And, how do you continue to train your horse, in my case for dressage, whilst completing the levels two and three? It looks like the parelli training might not be compatible with the dressage training. I got the impression that Parelli suggests that you carry out all three levels (the cake), before you move on to the training of your horse (ie jumping, dressage etc). but I really don't want to stop my normal training altogether. Does anyone have any advice, or could anyone with experience of Parelli clarify this a bit for me. Thanks! Esther.D 27th Jun 2003, 10:16 AM I am NOT experienced with Parelli, I have only done the first couple of games. However I have carried on riding - because it was proving more beneficial to Rupert to continue riding than to stop (as I originally intended to). What I did was try to work some of the Parelli into getting ready to ride, as well as sessions where I didn't ride at all. I do a couple of minutes of Parelli games with him before I mount and I found that really helpful anyway as he can get anxious when he is tacked up. janet hakeney 27th Jun 2003, 11:34 AM I haven't stopped doing everything else. The ground games will certainly help your dressage and make the horse softer. I found partucularly that when I started to ride in the halter my horse breathed a huge sigh of relief and then when I went back to an 'ordinary' bridle he wasn't as good as in the halter but was a great deal better than he had been in the bridle originally. My suggestion would be to do the parelli work and then a few days prior to a competition ride in your ordinary tack again to prepare for it. Have to admit that this happens much more frequently when Kerry has had some time with Sue (Carnell) rather than simply time with me myself. After time with Sue Kerry will sigh more often (and so do I). Then in subsequent days/weeks Kerry sighs more often in my presence and I haved always felt this was because she understands that I understand her a bit better (because I've "learned" a bit more about my own horse from Sue)!!!!!!!!! karenmw460 28th Jun 2003, 05:19 AM Thanks for the advice. I have just been looking at the Parelli website, and as far as I can tell, riding is not a part of the course until level 3. So, I guess that I could do 1,2 and part of 3 groundwork at least. Janet I am still a bit concerned about riding my horse in a halter, especially my competition horse. I am sure he will just go around with his head in the air, and surely then he will start to have incorrect muscling. I know you ride lusitanos, and having had experience of them here, I know they have a natural collection, so it may be easier with them to ride in the halter. I am also concerend about doing the course with no support. I live in thailand, so there is no way I can go to any clinics or instructors. Is it difficult to follow the course by yourself? janet hakeney 28th Jun 2003, 10:58 PM karenmw460.....riding is very much part of the course at all levels including 1 & 2....in fact flying lead changes come in at level 2. The home study packs are easy to follow and very specific (this causes critisism in some quarters for inflexability but at least you know what you should be doing) The videos are accompanied by pocket size work books that you can take out with you and work from. If you join the Savvy Club you have online support from a qualified Instructor. I have to say that if your competition horse sticks its head in the air when you take your bridle off and ride in halter don't you think that this just shows how much you are relying on a bit to 'hold' his head down rather than using your seat to bring his back up which will result in him bringing his head down? Yes I agree that Lusitanos are built for collection but untill I started doing Parelli my older stallion was very head high and tight in the neck and strong on the bit. I was sure that when I took the bit away I would be about three counties away before you could blink he is such a fizzbomb forward horse. It didn't happen and all he did was breath a huge sigh of relief. Now when he is ridden in a bridle or a halter he is reaching into the rein with a longer relaxed neck and light in the hand as a direct result of being ridden in a halter. karenmw460 29th Jun 2003, 08:35 AM Janet, thanks for all your advice...ít's been a great help. With regards to my competition horse, I would agree wholeheartedlly with what you say with any other horse, but this is an extremely difficult horse, and I don't really think I am relying on the bit to hold his head down. I am riding him up from behind with my seat and legs, and he goes nicely in a pelham or double bridle. In a snaffle he is extemely difficult to ride, even for my trainer, who rides Prix St George level. No matter how much you ride him up with your seat, he will not relax his jaw and round his neck in a snaffle. She says he is the most difficult horse she has ever ridden! However, since Parelli helped your horse so much, then maybe it will also help him. I guess it is worth trying. It's just that I don't want to completely stop what I am doing now, as it has been extremely time consuming and extremely hard work for my trainer and myself to get him to the point he is at now where he is managable to ride, no longer resisting, and quite light in the hand. I am thinking to join, but worried to spend a lot of money and not being able to cope on my own. So far, I've tried Kelly Marks foundation exercises, but Pégaso is adamant not to back away, or to be pushed out of his space, instead, he approaches me and gets so close that I feel intimidated. So far no good. No matter which NH approach, it's pointless trying to work on my own, alone in the arena with a horse that might decide to flat me as a pancake. Other sites for NH equipment are here. I can reccomend the quality of the Nungar Knots stuff, it isn't far off the quality of the proper Parelli equipment. NH eqipment (http://www.horsedata.co.uk/NaturalHorseEquipment.htm) I think it would be a good idea for you to join the club as you would be able to access help and support from the website. The videos and instructional pack are very good and detail how you can set about playing the games with your horse. I think that you will find them challenging but do-able, but purhaps it may take you a little longer than normal with the issues that your horse has. You will learn a lot about yourself as well as the horse along the way. You can carry on riding if you want to , but may end up finding that you get so absorbed in playing the ground games with him you are happy not to ride so much for a while. Riding is in the level 1 anyway albeit not a huge part of it. If you do join I suggest that you e-mail the USA Parelli site asking for details of anyone else in Portugal who is into it and asking about visiting Instructors. Years ago, people got crap for not beating a horse to 'break it' and now it's the opposite. I've never bought a single Parelli product, but I've still learned from their youtube videos alone, and now I have a mare I can lope bridless and side pass. Just saying, don't go with something just because everyone else is doing it. Go with something because it's kind to the horse, and it gets good results. It's not the tools he uses, it's how he uses them and if the tools are painless. In this case, spurs are not painful or aggressive to the horse if you use them with care and when needed.
